General Information

Tom Skinner began his photography career in 2001. Ten years prior to that he worked primarily as a long haul truck driver until a degenative spinal condition confined him to a wheel chair for a year which forced him to find new outlets to bide his time. The first thing he did was pick up a camera and start shooting for a motorcycle stunt riding outfit out of Kentucky. His action shots gained him recognition that eventually led to shooting headshots and model portfolios. Within two years he began working as a staff photographer for the East County Californian newspaper out of San Diego. After spending a year working with the paper, Skinner began freelancing for various magazines and digital outlets. It was while hiking in Rancho San Diego in 2004 that Skinner captured a rattle snake up close and personal. This led to a self revelation: nature was his passion. Even though he co-owned several portrait studios he kept returning to open terrain. Whether hiking in the Anzaborago Desert and Yellowstone National Park, or kayaking the Sea of Cortez in Baja, California, Skinner found his camera to be his constant companion and the best means of capturing the nuance missed by most everyone else. From big horned sheep to snow covered bison, from barnacle covered whales to the foam on the sea washed with evening sunset, Skinner used his lense to convey the beauty that was abundant and abound. Skinner's nature photos have been published in textbooks, magazines, and sold on-line
